San Mateo County Parks will leave the 3.8-mile stretch of Cañada Road between the Filoli entrance and Highway 92 open to cars on Sunday, Oct. 11, canceling that week's Bicycle Sunday because of staffing shortages over the Indigenous Peoples/Columbus Day weekend.
The county parks department announced the cancellation and warned cyclists and motorists to share the road that day.
Two more Bicycle Sundays will also be canceled later this year for holiday weekends.
Bicycle Sunday normally closes a 3.8-mile stretch of Cañada Road between the Filoli entrance and Highway 92 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The closure opens the road to joggers, cyclists, hikers, roller-skaters and walkers. Strollers are welcome. Ball and frisbee activity is not allowed.
Andrew Hsu, president of Peninsula Velo, a nonprofit cycling club whose members largely live in San Mateo County, described the program's value in a January post from the San Mateo County Parks Foundation. "Peninsula Velo is proud to support San Mateo County's most treasured bicycling event, available to everyone in the Bay Area (and beyond)," Hsu said.
Cañada Road between Edgewood Road and the Filoli entrance remains open to vehicles during Bicycle Sunday. Parking is available on Edgewood and Cañada roads and north at Highway 92. Restrooms are at nearby Edgewood Park & Preserve and the Pulgas Water Temple; participants should bring their own water.

Large organized groups need an event permit; call the parks reservation desk at (650) 363-4021 for details.
Upcoming Bicycle Sunday cancellations:

- Sunday, Dec. 27 (Christmas weekend)
