San Mateo County is looking to hire temporary workers for the Nov. 3 general election, with vote center pay starting at $26.33 an hour.

The county’s Registration and Elections Division is recruiting for positions including vote center representatives at $26.33 per hour and election office assistants at $24.91 per hour, according to an English-language reproduction of the county’s office assistant posting.

Previous vote center experience is preferred but not required for representatives. Both are temporary jobs that do not guarantee permanent employment.

Vote center representatives verify voter eligibility, issue ballots and help voters use voting equipment. Their Election Day shifts can run from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., or longer. Training is required.

Office assistant assignments include picking up and processing ballots, updating voter records and providing technical support. Some require a California driver’s license and lifting 25 to 50 pounds. The anticipated last day is Nov. 13.

The paid job postings describe Live Scan screening requirements.

The county also offers volunteer spots at vote centers, with compensation of up to $280 for Election Day work and training. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. Volunteers must be at least 18, fluent in English and U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Applications for the paid positions are accepted only online at jobs.smcgov.org and must include the county’s application and supplemental questionnaire. The vote center recruitment is continuous; its final filing date will be posted five days in advance. Volunteer applications follow a separate process.

All 50 vote centers will open Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the county elections website.
