A suspect who fled East Palo Alto police and jumped into the San Francisco Bay on Saturday, Aug. 29, was pulled from the water and arrested after a multi-agency operation near Cooley Landing.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said it received a call for help that morning after the suspect, described by the agency as "dangerous," ran from East Palo Alto officers on foot and entered the Bay near the East Palo Alto shoreline park. No agency has said what prompted the original pursuit.

Sheriff's deputies and three K-9 teams took positions along the shore, according to the Sheriff's Office, while a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter circled overhead and a Menlo Park Fire Protection District boat moved in on the water.

Video the Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook showed the CHP helicopter hovering low over the suspect, who was swimming in the Bay not far from shore. The suspect was brought aboard the fire district's boat, where East Palo Alto police officers made the arrest.

The Sheriff's Office described the operation as a coordinated, multi-agency effort in its Facebook post, which drew roughly 365,000 views. The agency said its deputies were "prepared, ready to assist and committed to public safety" when the call came in from East Palo Alto.

No charges have been filed publicly. No agency has identified the suspect by name, and it remains unclear whether the suspect needed medical attention after swimming in the Bay. None of the agencies involved have said whether any officers or bystanders were injured.

Cooley Landing sits at the eastern end of Bay Road in East Palo Alto, along the San Francisco Bay shoreline, according to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.
