San Mateo teens can win a $1,000 scholarship just by reading this summer.
The San Mateo Public Library's Summer Learning Challenge enters every teen who returns a completed reading log by Monday, August 31 into a raffle for the scholarship or a gift basket that includes earbuds, as first shared by @smplibrary on Instagram.
The program, which launched June 1, is simple: visit any San Mateo Public Library branch, pick up a free book and a paper reading log, then bring the log back before the deadline. Teens who prefer to track their reading digitally can submit an online form through the library's website instead.
Two free craft workshops at the Main Library give teens another reason to show up in person. Both are open to students in grades 8–12 and teens of all abilities. Registration is required.
Paracord Keychain Workshop
Thursday, July 16, 3:30–5 p.m., Oak Room, Main Library. Teens weave parachute cord into a keychain. Sign up through the library's LibCal calendar.
Beaded Accessory Workshop
Wednesday, July 22, 3:30–5 p.m., Oak Room, Main Library. Participants design a beaded cell phone charm, necklace, or bracelet. Registration is also available on LibCal.
The library described both workshops as open to neuroatypical and neurotypical participants, according to its teen programs page.
All programming is free. The Main Library is at 55 W. Third Ave., San Mateo. Call 650-522-7800 for questions.
