The San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees will decide Wednesday whether to approve the schematic design, budget and schedule for a new softball field at Aragon High School.

The board meets at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the district office, 650 N. Delaware St. in San Mateo. Residents can also join by Zoom (Webinar ID: 955 8452 1141; Passcode: 995656).

The softball field vote is the only construction item on the agenda. The district has not released the project's cost estimate or construction timeline publicly.

The project would be funded through Measure L, the $385 million general obligation bond voters approved in 2020 for capital improvements across the district's campuses. Aragon already benefited from the bond program: a new lighted artificial turf baseball and flex field opened with a ribbon cutting on March 4, 2025, according to the district's Measure L page.

The district completed its final Measure L bond sale on Sept. 30, 2025, issuing the remaining $96.25 million one year ahead of schedule, according to a district announcement. The overall interest rate came in at 3.0%, well below the original 5.75% estimate, saving taxpayers $267 million compared to projections at the time of the 2020 election.

Yancy Hawkins, the district's associate superintendent and chief business officer, said in a Sept. 30, 2025, district announcement about the bond sale: "We are proud to have issued our bonds in a prudent, cost-effective manner… Our community has a long history of supporting our efforts, and we are happy to deliver on our tax rate promise to them."

The board took a similar construction vote on June 25, approving the schematic design, budget and schedule for the San Mateo High School Pool Replacement Project.

Also Wednesday, the board will review the district's 2025-26 Unaudited Actuals, an annual financial report that tallies revenue and spending for the fiscal year that ended June 30. The board accepted the prior year's version of the report at its Sept. 11, 2024, meeting. Specific figures for the 2025-26 report have not been made public ahead of the meeting.

The agenda also includes several human resources items, among them a memorandum of understanding with Western Governors University and updates to classified job descriptions and salary schedules negotiated with the California School Employees Association (CSEA).
