A man accused of stealing bicycles from Caltrain over three months is in custody after San Mateo County Sheriff's Office deputies tracked him to a Hayward hotel.

Deputies obtained an arrest warrant and arrested Jesus S. Molina-Barajas, 28, of East Palo Alto on Monday, Aug. 31, the Sheriff's Office announced on X.

The office said deputies had been investigating nearly a dozen bicycle thefts from Caltrain between May and August 2026 — 10 separate reports in all, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Molina-Barajas was booked on multiple counts of grand theft of personal property and petty theft, according to the Sheriff's Office. He has not been charged or convicted. He was arrested in September 2025 in connection with a separate, prior bicycle theft, the Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators used video footage provided by Caltrain from inside the train to identify Molina-Barajas as the suspect, the Sheriff's Office said. The Sheriff's Office is contracted by Caltrain to provide policing services along the transit corridor, which serves passengers from San Francisco to Gilroy.

Deputies found Molina-Barajas at a hotel in Hayward. He was taken into custody without incident.

He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility at 300 Bradford Street in Redwood City, the county's main receiving jail for adult offenders.

Caltrain supports roughly 1.8 million bicycle trips each year, according to Caltrain, per the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office issued a press release announcing the arrest Wednesday, Sept. 2.
