Junipero Serra beat St. Ignatius on Saturday, Oct. 24, pushing the Padres to 5-0 in West Catholic Athletic League play and 7-1 overall.

The win kept Serra tied atop the WCAL varsity standings with Archbishop Riordan, which also stands at 5-0 in league after beating Valley Christian 24-9. Riordan is 6-2 overall.

The teams meet Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m. at Archbishop Riordan, according to Serra’s official schedule.

St. Ignatius dropped to 3-2 in league and 6-2 overall with the loss, according to the WCAL’s standings bulletin.

The Padres swept St. Ignatius across all three levels over the weekend. Serra’s junior varsity won 28-7 on Oct. 24, and its freshman squad won 41-13 on Oct. 23, according to the league.

Head coach Patrick Walsh is in his 26th season leading the San Mateo program. SFGate reported Oct. 13 that Walsh, Serra’s winningest coach with 214 victories at that time, planned to remain with the program “indefinitely.”

“I’m a NorCal native. This is my home … So Serra High School is in the blood now,” Walsh told SFGate.

Serra’s only loss this season came against De La Salle.

The Padres’ freshman team hosts Folsom on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. The JV team visits Archbishop Riordan on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m., before the varsity game at 1:30 p.m.
