Four candidates are on the ballot for two San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) board seats Tuesday, Nov. 3, with the first election night results expected by 8:10 p.m.
Election results are pending. This article will be updated as election officials release vote totals.
The San Mateo County election results portal showed zero votes for all four candidates when checked for this preview.
The district's Board of Trustees approved a resolution calling for the election at its April 30 meeting. Two trustee areas are in play.
Area 3
Diana Harris and Jennifer Jacobson are competing for the Area 3 seat, according to the San Mateo County election results portal. Voters in that area will choose one.
Area 5
Alison Proctor and Kimo Rosenbaum are vying for the Area 5 seat. That race is also a one-seat contest.
What's at stake
School boards across the Bay Area face a challenging stretch. Enrollment losses are prompting districts to reduce spending and close campuses, while math and reading achievement has declined, KQED reported in October. Many incoming boards will weigh how to respond to fewer students, with school closures among the possible responses, according to KQED.
Locally, the SMUHSD board adopted its 2026-2027 budget at its June 25 meeting. The board also approved a school-day cellphone ban March 26 for the 2026-27 school year and adopted a broader personal-device policy June 25, according to the district's policy page.
When to expect results
Polls close at 8 p.m. across California. San Mateo County's first results are expected at 8:10 p.m., according to the county's results schedule. The initial batch will include vote-by-mail ballots received by mail, at vote centers or in ballot drop boxes through Sunday, Nov. 1.
Updates will follow at 9 p.m. and then every hour until all vote center ballots are reported, according to the county.
Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive through Nov. 10 and still be counted. The county has until Dec. 3 to certify results, with state certification due by Dec. 11, according to the California secretary of state's election calendar.
As of 5 p.m. Nov. 1, the county elections office reported an estimated 136,573 vote-by-mail ballots and 4,769 vote center ballots received out of 449,447 registered voters countywide.
Results will be posted at the county's election night results page.
