San Mateo residents looking to fill their summer calendars have no shortage of free outdoor programming.
With live music in Central Park every Thursday, two weekly farmers' markets downtown, and a pair of big events on the horizon at Coyote Point, there is something for everyone.
The Central Park Music Series runs through August, bringing live bands and food vendors to Central Park each Thursday evening, according to the city of San Mateo. The series kicked off in June and is free and open to all. Specific performer lineups have not been posted on the city's website.
A few blocks away, the Downtown San Mateo Farmers' Market operates twice a week at 222 E. 4th Ave., in the parking lot of the former Draeger's Market. The Thursday market runs 3 to 7 p.m. and the Sunday market runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., both operated by West Coast Farmer's Market, according to the Downtown San Mateo Association.
Citywide Yard Sale: July 25–26
The city's annual Citywide Yard Sale returns Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26. Residents can host their own sale or team up with neighbors. Registration details are available
here.
"Host your own yard sale or partner with your neighbors for a community event to sell, swap, or recycle items you no longer need," the city said on its official Instagram account.
Coyote Point Summerfest: August 15
San Mateo County Parks announced Summerfest, a free community celebration at Coyote Point Recreation Area on Saturday, August 15. The lineup includes giant kites from the Kite Man of Martinez, drumming by Tatsumaki Taiko, train rides, dancing with Ballet Folklórico Casa, food trucks, and art activities with Círculo Cultural. Admission is free; parking costs $6. No registration is required.
Playground updates
Families should note two construction projects affecting local play areas. The Central Park playground renovation, which began in June 2025, remains underway. The city estimates the project will take 18 to 24 months total, putting completion between December 2026 and June 2027, according to The Almanac. Starting in July, the construction staging fencing is expanding to include the lawn area next to the Fallen Heroes Memorial.
At Coyote Point, the county plans to close the Magic Mountain playground on Friday, August 14, to begin building a $3.8 million replacement. After surveying 840 residents, 78% chose the "Magical Adventure in a Seaside Land" concept, which includes a sea-themed landscape and a 50-foot zipline accessible to visitors of all abilities, according to San Mateo County Parks. The new playground is expected to open in March 2027.
