San Mateo families are invited to celebrate the rebuilt Central Park playground during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 4 to 5 p.m.
The free event takes place at Central Park, 50 E. Fifth Ave. Registration is encouraged but not required, according to the city’s announcement.
The playground’s Adventure Village theme combines forest-inspired play structures with the park’s existing tree canopy. The renovation includes custom play equipment, a boardwalk system, upgraded pathways, lighting, fencing and seating.
Other improvements include a covered picnic shelter, water and sewer upgrades, and restoration of the central lawn with irrigation repairs and new sod.
A prefabricated restroom building with eight all-gender stalls replaced the previous facility, according to the city’s project updates.
The city reported in October that construction was complete, on schedule and within budget.
Community outreach completed in 2021 helped shape the design. Residents prioritized imaginative, inclusive and natural features, along with shade and seating. Swings, slides and climbing equipment were among the favored play elements.
The project moved through several years of planning. In October 2024, the city rejected all construction bids and began negotiating potential cost reductions with the lowest bidder. The City Council awarded the construction contract to Suarez and Munoz Construction Inc. in March 2025.
A groundbreaking ceremony followed April 24, 2025, and construction began June 2 that year.
The San Mateo City Parks and Recreation Foundation contributed $10,000 in honor of former Parks and Recreation Director Sheila Canzian’s retirement.
Residents can find the ceremony’s registration link on the city project page. For questions, contact Parks and Recreation at 650-522-7400 or [email protected].
