San Mateo residents and workers who want a behind-the-scenes look at how their city government operates have until Wednesday, Aug. 5, to apply for the free 2026 City Services Academy.

The 12-week program meets Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Aug. 19 and running through Nov. 4. It's open to anyone 16 or older who lives or works in San Mateo.

The City of San Mateo announced the application window on Monday, July 20, posting on its official X account that participants will "meet city leaders, tour facilities & more."

What participants can expect

Each week's session takes place at a different city location. According to the city's program page, participants interact directly with department heads including the city manager, fire chief, police chief, public works director, city librarian, and parks and recreation director. City Council members also take part.

The curriculum covers how policy decisions get implemented, day-to-day operations, project challenges, and budget and resource limitations. Sessions include site tours, case studies, and hands-on activities.

Class size is limited.
