A 25-year-old San Mateo man died Monday, Oct. 19, after his motorcycle struck a light pole on Franklin Parkway, according to Patch’s report citing San Mateo police.

Police received the crash report around 5:30 p.m. near Baze Road. Their initial account said the eastbound rider lost control and went off the road before hitting the pole.

Police and firefighters tried to save the rider before paramedics continued CPR. He died at the scene, police said.

Police said their preliminary findings indicated speed likely contributed to the crash. The rider wore a helmet, and police reported no involvement by another vehicle.

Investigators closed the stretch of Franklin Parkway from Baze Road to Saratoga Avenue for almost three hours.

Police had not released the rider’s name in the account published Oct. 20. The department said identification would come from the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office after family notification.

In a separate May 2025 motorcycle safety bulletin, the department cited National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures showing 6,218 motorcyclist deaths nationwide in 2022, accounting for 15% of traffic fatalities that year.

The bulletin listed 634 motorcyclist deaths in California in 2022, up 3.8% from 2021.

The department lists its Community and Media Relations office at 650-522-7626 or [email protected] for media inquiries.
