San Mateo Public Library will host a Silent Book Club read-in from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Laurel Room for Banned Books Week.
Registration is required, and space is limited. The event is open to adults, seniors and teens.
Participants can bring their own reading materials or choose from frequently banned books supplied by the library. The event also includes button-making.
The gathering coincides with a series of more than 400 read-ins organized by Silent Book Club and audiobook platform Libro.fm at libraries and independent bookstores in the United States and abroad, according to Silent Book Club’s announcement.
Participants at read-ins in the national campaign can choose a free audiobook of “How to Defend Books and Why” by Danny Caine or “Banned Together: Our Fight for Readers’ Rights,” edited by Ashley Hope Pérez, Publishers Weekly reported.
Banned Books Week runs Oct. 4–10 under the theme “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read,” according to the American Library Association. The observance began in 1982 in response to a surge in challenges to books in libraries, schools and bookstores.
A book challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict access to a title; it does not necessarily result in removal.
Residents can find event details and register through the library’s official event listing.
