A free guided marsh hike, a Halloween block party and a monthly makers' market headline San Mateo's October events calendar, published Sept. 25 by Bay Meadows.
The lineup spans Coyote Point, downtown B Street and the Bay Meadows neighborhood, with most events free or low-cost.
Marsh hike at Coyote Point
CuriOdyssey educators will lead a free guided hike through Coyote Point's wetlands on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The walk covers native plants, local wildlife and signs of seasonal change. RSVP is required, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Parking costs $6 per vehicle. Meeting-point details will be shared after registration at curiodyssey.org.
HEAD WEST Marketplace
The HEAD WEST Marketplace returns to B Street between 1st and 3rd avenues on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The monthly outdoor market features handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, clothing, food and art from local makers. The event is kid- and pet-friendly, ADA accessible and runs light rain or shine. The October vendor lineup had not been posted as of Sept. 25; check headwestmarketplace.com for updates.
Bay Meadows Run Club
The Bay Meadows Run Club, organized by Basecamp Bay Meadows, meets every Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 8 a.m. at 3050 S. Delaware St. Runners and walkers choose 2-, 3-, 4- or 6-mile loops.
No fee, no membership required.
Runners often gather afterward at Town Square for Blue Bottle Coffee or at the Fieldwork Brewing Company beer garden.
In a November 2023 post announcing the club's launch, member Alma said, "I'm not a runner. I've always struggled to be active. With Basecamp Run Club I don't have to go fast, I can go at my own pace and still feel accomplished."
Boos and Brews on B Street
The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown San Mateo Association host Boos and Brews on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. on the B Street Pedestrian Mall between 1st and 3rd avenues. The Halloween celebration includes trick-or-treating, arts and crafts, music, food, drinks and photo ops. Costumes are welcomed and encouraged. Downtown businesses will hand out candy; participating shops will be announced closer to the event.
