San Mateo County sheriff's deputies arrested a man carrying a loaded, concealed handgun on Broadway in Millbrae on Monday, Aug. 10, after a bystander reported seeing him with a gun.

Deputies responded around 12:30 p.m. to the 400 block of Broadway, according to Patch, citing the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. They located the man and found a Glock 17 9mm handgun concealed in his waistband, the Sheriff's Office said in an announcement on Instagram.

The gun was registered to the man, but he did not have a valid California concealed carry weapons license, according to Patch.

He was booked into Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in a public place.

The Sheriff's Office announced the arrest on Tuesday, Aug. 11, through its official social media accounts. The post said the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to address illegal firearm possession in the community.

Under California law, carrying a concealed firearm without a valid CCW license violates Penal Code 25400, and carrying a loaded firearm in public without one violates Penal Code 25850. Both offenses can be charged as misdemeanors or felonies depending on the circumstances, with a misdemeanor conviction carrying up to one year in county jail and a fine up to $1,000.

No formal charges have been filed, and no arraignment date has been announced for the suspect. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office contracts with Millbrae for law enforcement services, covering patrol and investigations in the city.
