Foster City police arrested a 61-year-old resident on Thursday, Aug. 6, in connection with the six-alarm condominium fire that injured four San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department firefighters and displaced more than 150 people.

The suspect, who lived in a first-floor unit at the Spinnaker Cove complex at 815 Sea Spray Lane, was taken into custody without incident and booked into the San Mateo County Jail, according to KRON4, citing the City of Foster City. Police said he was booked on suspicion of causing a fire that injured firefighters, obstructing a police investigation and interfering with a fire investigation.

The arrest followed a joint investigation by Foster City police and SMCFD.

Fire investigators announced Wednesday, Aug. 5, that the blaze was caused by an unattended propane barbecue on the exterior deck of the suspect's first-floor unit, according to the San Mateo Daily Journal. The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, and escalated to six alarms, drawing crews from agencies across San Mateo County.

When reached by phone Thursday, the suspect disputed the criminal allegations but declined to comment further until he consulted with his attorney, the Mercury News reported.

As we reported Aug. 4, all four injured SMCFD firefighters are expected to make full recoveries. One suffered burns, two were treated for smoke inhalation and a fourth sustained unspecified injuries. Two were transported to a hospital but have since been released.

SMCFD Fire Chief Matt Turturici described the difficulty crews faced in an Aug. 3 interview with the New York Post: "Every time they pulled a ceiling the fire was above them and they had to keep moving down."

The 51-unit building, constructed in 1981, did not have a fire sprinkler system. California's strict residential sprinkler requirements did not become law until 2011. Fire officials said the structure still poses a real danger of collapse and remains fenced off and red-tagged. No residents have been allowed to return.

The complex has been turned over to the homeowners association, though SMCFD crews will continue monitoring for hotspots.

More than 150 residents were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross reported 60 people still displaced as of Thursday, Aug. 6, and is continuing to assist residents. The Foster City Chamber of Commerce GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $39,000 from roughly 260 donations as of Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Students at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo organized a donation drive Thursday, Aug. 6, through the Hillsdale Community Closet, collecting clothing, toiletries and school supplies for displaced students ahead of the new school year.

The investigation remains active. No court date or arraignment has been announced.
