The northbound elevator at San Mateo's Caltrain station stopped working Monday, Aug. 10, leaving riders who use wheelchairs, strollers or have mobility challenges without standard access to the San Francisco-bound platform.

Caltrain Alerts posted the outage at 6:07 a.m., citing a "technical issue." The agency did not provide a repair timeline, name a cause beyond that two-word description or say whether an alternate accessible route is available at the station. A linked detail page from the transit app SimplifyTransit contained no additional information beyond what appeared in the alert itself.

The outage specifically affects the elevator serving the northbound platform, where riders board trains heading toward San Francisco. The alert did not address the status of the southbound elevator, meaning riders heading toward San Jose may still have elevator access, though Caltrain did not confirm that.

Riders who need accessible boarding and cannot use stairs face an immediate barrier at the station. Caltrain's alert account, which the agency describes as partially automated with approximate information, offered no guidance on alternative options such as ramp access or staff assistance at the platform level.

Third disruption in a week

The elevator failure marks the third service disruption to hit San Mateo's Caltrain stations in five days. On Wednesday, Aug. 5, Caltrain announced single-tracking that forced riders at Hayward Park and Hillsdale stations to board from the southbound platform only, as we reported Aug. 7. That earlier alert explicitly excluded San Mateo station and also lacked a stated cause or end time.

All three of San Mateo's Caltrain stops have now been affected by separate disruptions within a single week.

What riders should do

Caltrain has not announced when the elevator will be restored. Riders who need accessible boarding at San Mateo station should contact Caltrain customer service at 1-800-660-4287 (weekdays 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., weekends and holidays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to ask about assistance options. Live service updates are available on Caltrain's alerts page.
