Coyote Point's Magic Mountain Playground closes Monday, Sept. 14 for a full rebuild that will keep the popular play area shut until spring 2027.
San Mateo County Parks announced the construction start on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The playground, surrounding picnic area and EV charging stations in the adjacent parking lot will all be unavailable while work is underway.
The closure does not affect everything at Coyote Point. RV campsites and the restroom near Magic Mountain will stay open, and the rest of the recreation area remains accessible.
The replacement playground carries a sea-themed design called "Magical Adventure in a Seaside Land." More than 840 people cast votes through online and paper surveys, and the seaside concept won 78% of the vote, according to the county's survey results.
Plans call for an ocean-inspired play landscape where children can range freely and a 50-foot zipline designed for all abilities.
San Mateo County Parks also posted the closure notice on its X account on Tuesday, Sept. 8, listing the playground, picnic area and charging stations as offline for the duration of construction.
Families who drive electric vehicles to Coyote Point should note the adjacent charging stations will be down for the entire project. The county did not say whether alternative charging will be available nearby.
When the rebuild wraps up, the new Magic Mountain will greet visitors with a 50-foot zipline and a sea-themed landscape shaped by the community's own vote.
